Phantom Blade Zero Developer Criticizes Xbox, Declaring “Nobody Needs It”
A developer from S-GAME, the studio behind the upcoming PlayStation 5 console exclusive Phantom Blade Zero, recently made harsh comments about the Xbox platform, stating that “nobody” needs it. First revealed at the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, Phantom Blade Zero is the Beijing-based studio’s first console title, set to launch on PS5 and PC.
Phantom Blade Zero represents S-GAME’s most ambitious project to date, following their previous releases—a mobile game and a PC game. Despite S-GAME’s relative inexperience, the fast-paced samurai action showcased in Phantom Blade Zero’s trailers has garnered significant attention, even closing out the 2024 Summer Game Fest showcase. At the recent ChinaJoy 2024 games conference, an anonymous S-GAME developer reportedly addressed this question during an interview with Brazilian gaming website GamePlaysCassi. When asked about the absence of an Xbox port for Phantom Blade Zero, the developer allegedly said, “nobody needs this platform,” citing the lack of popularity of Xbox consoles in Asia and the difficulties posed by Microsoft’s ecosystem. The recent price hikes for Xbox Series X/S in Japan further diminish the platform’s regional appeal.
While these remarks are notably harsh, it is worth considering the possibility of a mistranslation. Nonetheless, this situation highlights a troubling trend of Asian games bypassing the Xbox platform in favor of PlayStation, Nintendo, and PC. A recent example includes Black Myth: Wukong, which delayed its Xbox version, inadvertently making it a PS5 console exclusive at launch. Although Phantom Blade Zero never confirmed an Xbox release, S-GAME may not be considering it if the developer’s comments are accurate.
Given Microsoft’s shrinking market share in the East, many Asian studios likely find Xbox ports economically unfeasible. This trend is also evident with larger companies like Square Enix, which has yet to bring major titles such as Final Fantasy 7 Remake and FF16 to Xbox. While Phantom Blade Zero does not have a release window yet, Xbox fans can only hope that the platform gains enough popularity to justify a port by the time the game launches.
