The world has been experiencing what is called a “population explosion” since the last two decades. This overbearing rise in population can be considered as the most serious environmental issue the world is facing right now. This essay will discuss why i completely agree with the statement given.

To embark on, a constant rise in the number of people leads to a rise in their necessities as well. A very important factor which has caused a surge in the air pollution is the use of fossil fuels. Because there is a need to mobilise an increasing number of people, there is a rise in the use of petrol and diesel which not only causes harm to the environment when being used in vehicles, but also while they are being extracted from unimaginable depths. For instance, the air pollution index has always been significantly lower in rural areas when compared to their urban counterparts. Thus air pollution is a direct consequence of rising population.

Another reason is the ever rising problem of water scarcity. Though the earth is made up of 70% of water, only 3% of it is fresh water and therefore fit for human consumption. This balance of availability and utilisation of water has become upset because of overpopulation. For example, in developing countries, 80% of rivers, which are the primary source of fresh water has dried up due to overconsumption. This leads to terrible famines every summer in many places of such countries. This constant depletion of water has created a massive environmental issue.

To conclude, there is a trend of rising population in almost all countries. This has created lots of problems related to the environment like the air pollution and a devastating depletion in fresh water sources. Therefore, i firmly believe population rise is the source of many problems like these.
