    Dear Sir or Madam

I am writing to you regarding your advertisement in The Times of India newspaper published last week asking for volunteers to support a fundraising event. I would be interested to contribute my service to this event, since the amount collected is intended to be used for a social cause.

I understand from the article that the collected money would be used for the health care expenses of abandoned elderly people, therefore it could benefit them at their most desperate times. Hence, I would be very delighted in lending my hand to volunteer for such a noble cause.

In the past, I have been involved in several charity events in my school days since I was an active member of the National Service Scheme. Last year, I was a part of the fundraising team at my work which helped to pay the educational fees of destitute children.

I would suggest that conducting rally at main areas of the city, by displaying sign boards which will depict the cause of fund being collected would be of more help. I could help by setting up the display boards as I am a design engineer, therefore I could come up with more creative ideas.

I look forward to hearing from you.

    Yours faithfully,

    Madhumitha Murali

In some nations, owing to the fast growth of large businesses like supermarkets and malls, various small businesses find it difficult to thrive. A large number of people believe that shutting off such local business will cause destruction of local communities. I completely agree with this since absence of small businesses will greatly impact the livelihood of local workers and also makes life complicated for people who live at countryside.

Many people depend on the opportunities available in their local communities for their jobs, therefore closure of small business might result in them losing their jobs. This will result in an increase in social burden and the other related problems like poverty and illiteracy. A recent survey shows that on an average, 80% of people in many countries have their jobs based on local businesses. Hence, without these businesses people may have to face unemployment.

Furthermore, people living in countryside will find it very difficult to purchase their daily needs, since most large shops prefer to be established in cities. This will result in not only having to travel long distance to get their commodities , but also to pay more since items in such supermarkets would be expensive. For example, people living in villages rely solely on local stores for buying their household goods and products. Consequently, absence of small shops and business in countryside will make their life miserable.

In conclusion, although large supermarkets seems to provide people with more products and facilities, the closure of small businesses will affect the life of workers in the local community and also proves to be difficult and expensive for people living in countryside.

    Dear Mark

Hope you’re doing well. I am excited to let you know that I have received admission from National University of Singapore and I’m in need of your help for a part-time job search.

The duration of the course is 2 years and starts mid April. The classes are from 9 am 5 pm, hence I would be free most of the evenings and also on weekends.

I was thinking of ways to spend my leisure time effectively where I came up with the idea of getting a job for myself. This not only keeps me away from boredom, but also helps in taking care of my expenses.

As you have been in Singapore for quite sometime, it would be helpful if you can help me with the procedure to hunt half-time jobs. Also share my resume to your friends and relatives, so that it would be convenient for me to know openings at various companies.

Looking forward to hear from you on this regard soon.

    Regards,

    Madhu

Education plays a crucial role in molding children to face today’s fast paced world. Some people think that art and music should be removed from school syllabus so that children can concentrate on professional subjects. I disagree with this view because cultural subjects can inculcate creativity in students and allows the to have a passion in life.

One of the main advantages of learning arts and music is that it helps children to develop inherent creativity. This will hep them in taking part in extra-curricular activities, therefore their talent gets established. Many governments foster schools in their respective countries to allocate special training for non academic activities, which will help them shine not only professionally but also culturally. Hence, arts and music play a significant role in enhancing the cultural heritage of a country.

Furthermore, learning cultural subjects will allow children to develop a passion in life. For instance, many students do not know what they are interested in until they are given an exposure to such subjects at school. This would allow them to explore and find the right direction towards finding the activities they love indulging in. The more the students are allowed to experiment with different subjects, the more easier it would be for them to identify their talents and capabilities.

In conclusion, though studying professional subjects like information technology may seem to be useful for students, cultural subjects allows them to find their hidden talents and also helps to improve creativity and uniqueness. Hence, schools should be encouraged to teach such subjects to their children.

Some museums require visitors to pay entrance fee , while others allow them to visit free of charge. In my opinion, the advantages of collecting fees outweigh the drawbacks, mainly because it helps in providing more facilities to the visitors and also the artists feel that their work is valued.

The main reason why people should pay for visiting the museum is that it would help the museum management to provide more facilities. For instance, the cleanliness of the venue would be well maintained, since there would be a stable income rather than depending on sponsorships which are unreliable. This will result in an enhanced user experience to the visitors. The more money is spent on maintenance of the museum, the more benefits it provides to the customers.

Another significant reason is that the artists whose art works are displayed in the museum would feel that it is valued and appreciated. They could also be paid based on the income received from the collection of entrance fees, hence their livelihood is dependent on it. This could also serve as a motivating factor for them to produce more creative art works. Hence , the benefits of collecting fees to the creator of the art is more.

In conclusion, admission fees collected by museums is a fundamental income for providing more services to people visiting it. Also it makes the artists feel worthy of their work, by providing them with a standard mode of income. Therefore, the advantages of museums charging people for admission is far more than its disadvantages.

Building an efficient and commutable transport system is a major responsibility of the government of a country. Some people think that more money should be invested on railway system, while others think that roadways should be concentrated on more. This essay will discuss why money spent on railways is far more effective than roadways.

One of the major advantages of railways is that it causes less environmental pollution compared to vehicles on roads, which causes detrimental effects to the nature. Rail transportation provides less damage to the atmosphere, hence making the earth a better place to live in. Many countries have cut down the amount of CO2 released into the air by adopting public transportation methods. The more money spent on building an efficient railway system, the more the people will start using them, hence making a pollution less environment.

Travelling in trains helps office-goers to reach their work on time, since there is no traffic problems unlike road travel, therefore they will be more productive at their job. This would help people complete their work on time, thereby reducing the working hours. For example, many companies encourage their employees to use rail transportation to commute to work, hence reducing their travel time. Hence, railways have proven benefits in saving people’s time.

In conclusion, railways play a significant role in reducing environmental pollution and it also proves to be a time saving mode of transport compared to roadways, therefore, governments should concentrate more on providing a better rail system to its citizens rather than investing money on roads.

    Dear Sir or Madam

I am writing to report the noise that arises from the refurbishment of an old theatre at the Hillburgh council since the past two weeks.

I am a resident of first lane in the Hillburgh Council and I have been living here for the past 10 years. As a senior citizen, I have always loved the calm and serene environment of this place.

Although, for the past two weeks there has been intolerable noise since an existing theatre in the area is being remodeled. This is a major concern for all the residents here, especially older people like me are highly displeased. The drilling sound not only causes severe damage to the ears, but also creates unnecessary stress for people with cardiac problems.

I would like to suggest that the local council could make arrangements for using noise free equipments for carrying out these works, so that it would be of help to myself and my fellow residents.

I look forward to hearing back from you immediately.

    Yours faithfully,

    Dear Sam

I recently received your letter about the problem you are facing at your current job. I’m writing to you on the possible approach to this situation.

I completely understand how difficult it is to cope with dominating colleagues, especially if it is your own boss. This happens in most of the work places, therefore it is nothing to be deeply worried about.

Infact, I had faced a similar situation at my previous job from one of my co-worker, who always used to find faults with everything that I did. I felt it very annoying, hence I reported him to my manager. Since then, my co-worker did not bother me.

I would suggest that you follow the way as mine by reporting your boss’s behavior to your super boss, so that this does not continue in the future. This may also prevent your co-worker from annoying other colleagues.

I hope this suggestion would be helpful to you.

    Dear Sir/Madam

I am writing to let you know that I have recently lost my mobile phone on my vacation last week. I have opted travel insurance from your company, and would like to claim the cost of my lost phone.

I had been on a trip to Singapore last week, where I had taken along my Apple iPhone 12 pro max. I had purchased it for INR 90,000, just the week before my vacation, hence it is brand new. The color of the phone is steel grey and I have also equipped it with a mobile cover worth INR 5000, to prevent accidental damage.

I lost the phone when I was having dinner at a restaurant on the last day of my trip. I am not sure if it was missed or have been stolen. I immediately informed the restaurant manager , but it could not be found.

Since I have included my mobile phone in the insurance cover, I am entitled to ask for a refund on the lost item. I would be grateful if you could let me know the process and the documents which are to be submitted to facilitate the claim.

Looking forward to hear from you soon.

    Dear Mrs. Dorathy,

I am one of your old students from the 2017 batch at the National University. I am writing to ask you a favour of providing me with a reference letter that I am required to submit to support my job application.

The job for which I am about to attend interview is in one of the leading multinational companies. They have vacancy for Software Engineer and the recruited candidate will be working in cloud platforms, which is a hot technology in the market.

In my current job, I do not see a potential growth in my career, in spite of working hard. This is because, I am into a legacy project, which makes use of a very old technology, that has almost become extinct in the software world. Hence, this job interview is crucial for me to work in the relevant field, in which I am actually interested.

I would be grateful if you could write about my academic performance, leadership skills and conduct, in the reference letter so that it would improve my chances of getting the job.

I look forward to getting your reply soon.

    Dear Sir,

I am writing to you regarding a wrong information about my hometown, Chennai, in one of the articles of your popular magazine “The Reader’s Digest”, published on 1st August 2021, that needs your immediate attention.

The article mentions that the airport in Chennai has only domestic travel facilities, however, it was refurbished about 3 months ago and has been extended to accommodate international travel as well, which probably you are not aware of.

Correcting this information in your magazine is crucial since this is an international magazine, potential visitors may not consider travelling to Chennai for vacation, thinking that the place does not have room for international travel, by reading your article. This may not only affect the livelihood of many people who rely on income from tourists, but also reduce the overall revenue of our country.

A possible way of handling this would be to correct this article with the right information and issue it in your next publication, so that visitors may read it and consider visiting my town.

Thank you for your consideration in advance.

    Yours faithfully,

    Madhumitha Murali

    Dear Sir

I am writting to express my appreciation on your company’s initiative of sponsoring either our community’s sports team for children or arranging open air concerts for local people.

Undoubtedly, your support for the sports team would help them get better training, therefore, there are more chances of victory in the upcoming leagues. This would not only bring fame to our area and your company but also attract more sponsors in the future.

On the other hand, your company’s idea of organising open-air concerts would certainly entertain people of all age groups. Besides, it gives an opportunity for the local bands to show case their talent. Thus, many young people could get inspired and motivated to develop interest in such cultural activities.

However, I personally feel that spending on promoting children’s sports would be a better option. Because, financially backward students, who cannot afford to take special trainings can participate under your sponsorship.

I look forward to receive a positive reply from your end.

Waste management at households should become a part of our daily routines and a lot of arguments could be observed regarding this. Whether people should take part in these activities themselves or the government should impose strict laws to reinforce recycling of waste. This essay will discuss why stringent law from government is required in order to make people responsible in managing trash at home.

Making recycling as a legal requirement would help people participate in the recycling process because this can invoke fear in them of getting penalized or having to pay fine. For instance, in countries like UAE and Qatar, when the government identifies unhandled waste from household, a huge amount of fine has to be paid, which makes people cautious of segregating the wastes of their daily life. Hence the stricter the laws, the more aware people would be about trash management, which leads to a cleaner environment.

Moreover, it is a harsh truth that many people do not participate in managing household waste due to their negligence or unawareness. In this case, the government can conduct various campaigns and roadshows on recycling, which will change people’s mindset on being more responsible towards the environment. For example, many environmental laws remained unknown to people in India, until in 2000 a government organization decided to conduct awareness programs through different mediums, after which the country has seen a tremendous improvement in managing their waste. Hence the more a government keeps its people aware, the more responsible they would be in protecting their nature.

In conclusion, in order to make people understand and follow a healthy process of recycling to manage waste in household, it is essential that the government not only impose strict laws, but also try to create awareness as much as possible. This can result in a drastic difference in how people understand the value of keeping their house and environment healthier.
